Real Madrid, Super Cup champions for the tenth time

Three competitive games, two trophies. Real Madrid’s season has got off to a flyer. After last week’s UEFA Super Cup win over Manchester United in Skopje, Zinedine Zidane’s side wrapped up the tenth Spanish Super Cup in the club’s history with a 2-0 (5-1 agg.) win over Barcelona.

The home side started strongly, setting a high tempo and pushing forward into the Barcelona half. Their intensity was rewarded within minutes, as Marco Asensio surprised Marc-Andre ter Stegen with a sensational left-footed drive from well outside the box. The young forward, whose form has attracted almost universal acclaim, thus became only the fourth player in Real Madrid history to score in both legs of a Super Cup tie against Barcelona after Ivan Zamorano (1993), Raul Gonzalez (1997) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2012).

Barcelona clawed their way back into the game but the home side continued to threaten. Lucas Vazquez came close only to see his shot rattle the post but Karim Benzema made no mistake from close range on 39 minutes, turning expertly in the box before firing decisively past ter Stegen.

Ernesto Valverde’s side came out strongly in the second half but were denied by an inspired Keylor Navas between the sticks and the woodwork. First Lionel Messi burst through on goal only to see his shot rock the crossbar before bouncing agonisingly along the goal lines, while Luis Suarez saw his low header bounce against the wrong side of the post.

Super Cup champions for the first time since 2012. And Zidane’s impressive trophy haul as Real Madrid coach continues. Seven finals… and seven trophies.
